“No prophet is ever accepted in his own country.”

—Luke 4:24

When Jesus returns to Nazareth, the people who knew Him from childhood cannot receive what He is revealing. They see the carpenter’s son, the familiar face, the life they have always known. And because they believe they already understand Him, their hearts close to the deeper mystery standing before them.

There is a warning for us in this Gospel. Sometimes what is most familiar becomes hardest to recognize. God comes to us through the small moments in our days, through hidden graces and subtle invitations. Yet when our hearts grow accustomed to these things, we may fail to see the presence of God moving among us.

The Lord still speaks, still heals, still calls. But to hear Him we must remain humble enough to look again and listen again, allowing Christ to reveal Himself anew each day.

When our hearts remain open in this way, we begin to see that the God we thought we knew is always deeper, always greater, always inviting us further into His life.
